How to Calculate a Tip
Total = Bill + Tip Amount
Per Person = Total ÷ Number of People
Example: ₹1,200 bill, 15% tip, 4 people
Tip = ₹180 · Total = ₹1,380 · Per person = ₹345
Standard Tipping Etiquette
| Service Type | Typical Tip | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Restaurant (good service) | 10–15% | Standard in India |
| Restaurant (exceptional) | 18–20% | Fine dining |
| Food delivery | ₹20–50 | Per delivery |
| Taxi / cab driver | 10% | Or round up |
| Hotel housekeeping | ₹50–100/day | Per stay |
| Salon / spa | 10–15% | Discretionary |
Splitting Bills Fairly
When splitting a bill, there are a few approaches: equal split (everyone pays the same), proportional split (each pays for what they ordered), or host pays. Our calculator handles equal splits — for proportional splits, calculate each person's subtotal separately.
💡 Pro tip: Always add the tip before splitting, not after. Splitting first and then each person tipping separately often results in under-tipping.
