How Age is Calculated
Age calculation seems simple but has nuances. A person born on 15 March 2000 turns 25 on 15 March 2025 — but what age are they on 10 March 2025? They are 24 years, 11 months and 23 days old. Our calculator uses the same logic as legal and civil age determination: comparing year, month and day components and borrowing days/months where needed.
Age Calculation LogicYears = Current Year − Birth Year (adjusted for month/day)
Months = Current Month − Birth Month (adjusted for day)
Days = Current Day − Birth Day (borrowing from previous month if needed)
Months = Current Month − Birth Month (adjusted for day)
Days = Current Day − Birth Day (borrowing from previous month if needed)
Why Exact Age Matters
- Legal purposes: Voting eligibility, driving licence, retirement benefits, senior citizen discounts — all depend on exact birth date.
- Medical use: Doctors calculate age precisely to determine medication dosages, vaccination schedules and developmental milestones.
- Insurance & finance: Life insurance premiums, pension calculations, and fixed deposits often depend on exact age.
- Academic: School admission cut-off dates require precise age calculation.
