Standard Calculator – How to Use It & Key Tips

Your essential everyday arithmetic tool — free, instant, keyboard-ready.

A standard calculator performs the four basic arithmetic operations — addition, subtraction, multiplication and division — along with percentages, sign toggling and power functions. It is the most widely used calculation tool in the world, from everyday shopping to professional accounting.

How to Use SmartCalc's Standard Calculator

SmartCalc's standard calculator is available instantly on the calculator page. You can operate it entirely by mouse/touch or via keyboard shortcuts:

  • Numbers: Click the digit buttons or press 0–9 on your keyboard
  • Operators: +, −, ×, ÷ buttons, or keyboard +, -, *, /
  • Equals: = button or press Enter
  • Clear all: AC button or press Escape
  • Clear entry: CE button
  • Delete last digit: ⌫ button or Backspace key
  • Percentage: % button converts current number to its decimal form
  • Power: xʸ button for exponentiation

Order of Operations (BODMAS / PEMDAS)

The standard calculator follows simple left-to-right chained calculation. If you need to follow strict mathematical order of operations (brackets first, then division and multiplication, then addition and subtraction), use the Scientific Calculator or input values in the correct order.

Example: To calculate 5 + 3 × 2 = 11 (not 16), enter: 3 × 2 = (gets 6) then + 5 = (gets 11).

Understanding the Calculation History

SmartCalc stores your last 25 calculations in a scrollable history panel below the keypad. Each entry shows the full expression and result. You can clear history at any time by clicking the "Clear" button. History is stored only in your browser memory — it disappears when you close the tab, ensuring complete privacy.

Percentage Calculations Made Easy

The % button divides the current number by 100. Common uses:

  • Find 15% of 200: Type 200 × 15 % = → Result: 30
  • Add 18% GST to 1000: Type 1000 + 18 % = → Result: 1180
  • Discount 20% off 500: Type 500 − 20 % = → Result: 400

Chained Calculations

You can chain multiple operations without pressing = after each step. For example: 10 + 5 × 2 − 3 = processes left to right, giving 27. The running result updates in the display after each operator press, so you always see where you are in the calculation.

When to Use a Standard vs Scientific Calculator

Use the standard calculator for everyday arithmetic — shopping totals, bill splitting, simple interest, unit counting, and percentage calculations. Switch to the scientific calculator when you need trigonometric functions, logarithms, factorials, or complex mathematical operations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. SmartCalc's standard calculator fully supports keyboard input. Use number keys 0–9, operators +, -, *, /, Enter for equals, Backspace to delete, and Escape to clear.
Calculations are stored in browser memory only during your current session. No data is sent to any server. History clears automatically when you close or refresh the tab.
SmartCalc uses JavaScript's IEEE 754 double-precision arithmetic, which handles numbers up to approximately 1.8 × 10^308. For everyday calculations this is more than sufficient.
The % button divides the current number by 100. When used after an operator (e.g. 500 × 20 %), it calculates that percentage of the first number, making it ideal for discounts and tax calculations.
Yes, completely free. No account, no subscription, no download required. SmartCalc's standard calculator is available at any time on any device.
