Complete Guide to Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY)
Launched under the Government of India's "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao" campaign, the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana is one of the highest-yielding small savings schemes in the country. It provides sovereign safety, high compounding interest, and complete tax immunity for building a dedicated fund for a girl child's higher education and marriage.
1. Who Can Open an SSY Account?
- Eligibility: The account can be opened by biological parents or legal guardians on behalf of an Indian resident girl child from her birth up to 10 years of age.
- Account Limits: A family can open a maximum of two accounts (one for each girl child). An exception is granted for triplets or twin girls born in the first or second order of birth, supported by medical certificates.
- Where to Open: Any authorized post office branch or designated public and private commercial banks (such as SBI, HDFC, ICICI, PNB, Canara Bank, and Axis Bank).
- Deposit Limits: Minimum annual deposit is ₹250; maximum limit is ₹1,50,000 per financial year.
2. What Happens After 15 Years of Deposits?
A widespread misconception is that parents must deposit money for all 21 years. In reality:
- Deposit Period: Deposits are required only for the first 15 years from the date of account opening.
- Compounding Period (Years 16 to 21): For the remaining 6 years, no further deposits are allowed or required. The entire accumulated balance continues to compound at the prevailing quarterly interest rate.
- As demonstrated in our schedule, a ₹1.5 Lakh annual deposit accumulates to ₹44.75 Lakh at Year 15, which expands passively into ₹71.82 Lakh at Year 21 purely through compound interest!
3. Partial Withdrawal Rules for Higher Education
To support higher education milestones, the Government allows partial withdrawals under the following guidelines:
- The girl child must have reached 18 years of age or completed the 10th standard.
- Withdrawal is capped at up to 50% of the balance standing at the end of the preceding financial year.
- Withdrawals can be taken in a single lump sum or in up to 5 annual installments to match semester fee demands.
- Note: Always verify current documentation requirements and circulars with your bank branch or local post office before applying for withdrawal.
4. Sovereign Safety and EEE Tax Exemptions
Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana carries the prestigious Exempt-Exempt-Exempt (EEE) tax classification under Indian tax laws:
- Exempt at Investment: Contributions qualify for deduction under Section 80C up to ₹1,50,000 annually.
- Exempt at Accumulation: The annual compound interest credited to the account on March 31 is completely exempt from income tax.
- Exempt at Maturity: The entire maturity corpus withdrawn at 21 years is 100% tax-free under Section 10(11D).
