What is a Ratio?
A ratio compares two quantities of the same kind. It answers 'how many times is one quantity compared to another.' Ratios can be written as A:B, A/B, or 'A to B'. They are used in recipes, map scales, financial analysis, mixing chemicals, photography, and countless other applications.
Example: 12 : 8 → GCD(12,8) = 4 → 3 : 2
Proportions — Finding Missing Values
A proportion states that two ratios are equal: A:B = C:D. If three values are known, the fourth can always be found by cross-multiplication:
Example: 3:4 = 6:D → D = (4 × 6) ÷ 3 = 8
